CopyOMEGA Ω Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Classic Style: Transparent Case Back Explained

Got a new toy in my hands and I’m pretty excited, it’s a CopyOMEGA Ω Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, the one with the transparent case back. You know, the classic style. I’ve been wanting to get my hands on one of these for a while now, so I finally pulled the trigger and ordered one.

First off, I did some digging online to see what’s what with these Speedmaster watches. Found out that the “Pro” models are kind of a big deal, they’re based on the original Moonwatch and are usually a bit bigger than the other versions. The main differences are the movement and the crystal. Apparently, there are two main types of movements, the Cal. 1861 and the Cal. 1863. The 1861 is your classic Moonwatch movement with a solid case back, while the 1863 has a transparent back so you can see the movement working. Both are pretty good for keeping time and all that chronograph stuff.

These watches are supposed to hold their value, especially the vintage ones and limited editions. So, I figured, why not get a copy version first to see if I really like it before spending big bucks on the real deal. Did some searching around to figure out how to spot a fake, and it seems like the movement is the key. Real ones are mechanical, so that’s something to look out for.

I heard that OMEGA kicked off 2021 by upgrading the Moonwatch to something called a “Master Chronometer” with a new movement, the Cal. 3861. Sounds fancy, but I’m not there yet.

So, I found a copy that looked pretty good, with the red dial that I really dig and ordered it online. It arrived today, and I’ve been wearing it around the house. Feels good on the wrist, not too heavy, not too light. The transparent case back is cool, I like seeing all those little gears and springs moving around.

Here’s what I did step-by-step:

  • Researched the different Speedmaster models and movements.
  • Compared the Cal. 1861 and Cal. 1863 movements.
  • Learned how to spot fake Speedmasters by checking the movement.
  • Found a copy version with a transparent case back and red dial.
  • Ordered the watch online.
  • Received the watch and started wearing it.

So far, so good. I’m going to wear it for a few weeks and see how it holds up. If I still like it, I might start saving up for the real thing. It’s a classic for a reason, and I’m starting to see why. Plus, it’s just fun to say “Moonwatch.”
