Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to remake a Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse for a while now. I finally took the plunge and went for it. I’m talking about the 5738R model, the one that just oozes class. You know what I mean?
First things first, I did my homework. I went down the online rabbit hole, looking up everything about the Golden Ellipse 5738R. Read a ton of reviews, watched videos, the whole nine yards. I really wanted to get a feel for the watch, especially the design and features, before I started messing around.
Then, I started sketching. Yeah, good old pencil and paper. I sketched out the shape, the dial, the hands, everything. I wanted my remake to be as close to the original as possible, so I paid close attention to the details. I must have gone through a dozen sketches before I was happy with the design.
Next up, I started experimenting with materials. I’m no watchmaker, so I went with what I had on hand. Cardboard, plastic, some metal scraps I found in the garage. It was a lot of trial and error, let me tell you. I tried different combinations, different shapes, just to see what worked and what didn’t. I just tried to make it.
- I cut out the basic ellipse shape from cardboard. It took a few tries to get it right.
- Then, I used some thin plastic for the dial. I even drew the hour markers by hand.
- For the hands, I used some thin metal strips. Bending them into the right shape was a real pain.
Putting it all together was another challenge. I used glue, tape, whatever I could find to stick the pieces together. It wasn’t pretty, but hey, it was starting to look like a watch! Finally, all that was left was the strap. I just used some old leather scraps for that. I had to fix all the parts together to make sure they didn’t fall apart easily.
The Result
And there you have it! My very own Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse 5738R remake. It’s not perfect, of course. It doesn’t tell time, for one thing, and it’s definitely not made of gold. But I’m pretty proud of it. It was a fun project, and I learned a lot along the way. It is not an easy job, I mean, it is way harder than I thought. Maybe next time I’ll try a different model. Or maybe I’ll just stick to buying the real thing. What do you guys think? I think I did a decent job, right?
